A cruise ship bailed out.

EMRI Services helped a cruise ship in Norway to set to sea safely again.

The ship has two main engines that provide for the propulsion. The power system of the ship consists of two auxiliary engines and two shaft generators. The shaft generators are each connected to one of the two main engines, which also drive the propellers.

The ship is equipped with a PTO-PTI system (also known as a ‘Take-Me-Home’ system). This system makes it possible to use the generator as an electric engine.

Normally, the main engine drives the propeller and a generator at the same time. In this way, the generator provides power for the on-board power system. This is known as ‘Power Take-Out (PTO)’. In other words, power/electricity is coming from the generator. When the generator is operating in ‘Power Take-In (PTI)’ mode, it takes in power, so that it operates as an electric engine. The necessary electrical power is supplied by auxiliary generators (or in the case of this service job, by the generator connected to the other shaft generator).

Why this system?
If one of the two main engines malfunctions, the drive is reduced by half, making the ship difficult to manoeuvre. When a PTO-PTI system is installed, the shaft generator can act as an electric engine and drive the propeller. The ship can then be safely piloted into a port.

Why we were deployed
When starting up in PTI mode, the generator (or rather, the electric engine) no longer started up as an engine. As a result, the propeller could no longer be used for the intended emergency operation.

How was this solved?
The control system of the generators originally consisted of AVK modules: the AVK Cosimat N+, the AVK SR2 module and the AVK UF module, with droop control when the generator acted as an engine. This was not the best solution.

The AVK control system was replaced by the EMRI COSIMAT LXCOS. This regulator developed by EMRI integrates a large number of options, including SR2 and UF. The replacement of three modules by a single product creates a transparent, more stable, more reliable and more maintenance-friendly solution. The COSIMAT LXCOS control system installed, with integrated cos (phi) regulation for the synchronous engine, functions better because, unlike the original control system, it is not influenced by fluctuations in the on-board power system.

A perfect step for a safer and more reliable ‘Take-Me-Home’ system.

Due to the large number of service jobs in shipping, EMRI has specialised in PTO-PTI systems. The following products were developed for this: RunDect, ZSM, Cosimat LXCOS, RCU and complete controls for generators.
